Ras Muhamed Snorkeling by Bus

Ras Mohammad is a national park in Egypt at the southern extreme of the Sinai Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Suez on the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east. About 30 km south of Sharm El Sheikh there is the southernmost part of Sinai: the Ras Mohamed. With its extraordinary beauty it is one of the most interesting sites in Sinai specially for snorkeling and diving activities. This first Egyptian National Park was declared in 1983 with an area of 97m². Since then it has been extended to 480km² and includes marine and terrestrial areas. Climate: Ras Mohammad National Park experiences a very dry climate, with only minimal rainfall during the winter. During the summer, temperatures often exceed 40°C (104°F) and low temperatures around 27°C (81°F). Temperatures are mild during the winter, with daytime high temperatures averaging around 23°C (73°F) and low temperatures 14°C (56°F). Diving, snorkeling: Several areas in Ras Mohamed are an amazing experience for divers and snorkelers. Since the Gulf of Aqaba is very deep, the coral reef at Ras Mohamed sows up with a tremendous variety, enormous colours and spectacular underwater scenes. Corals: The Park is surrounded by magnificent coral reefs that are famous in the whole world for its unique beauty. These corals are part of an elevated promontory that emerged after a change in the coastline some 70.000 years ago.

Ras Mohammed National Park

Ras Muhamed is the most famous national park in Egypt and one of the most famous diving sites in the world. A national park that is located between the rich coral reefs of the Red Sea, and the inland desert of the Sinai- it covers the coral headland at the most south tip of Sinai. At the southern end of the headland there is a small stand of Mangrove, Beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea you’ll find coral reefs teeming with life including a diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate species. Slightly further offshore you might spot dolphins, including Risso’s Dolphin, Grampus griseus. The area hosts White Stork, Ciconia ciconia, during their annual migrations.

2
Egypt’s Oldest National Park

Ras Muhamed National Park occupies one of the world’s most extraordinary settings: a slender, dramatically arid peninsula at the very southernmost tip of the Sinai, rising to a dramatic promontory that looks out over some of the most gloriously rich coral reefs that you will ever see. The Ras Muhammd peninsula marks the nexus of the shallow Gulf of Suez and the deep intercontinental chasm of the Gulf of Aqaba, itself a small portion of the Great Rift Valley that stretches deep into Africa. Declared a park in 1983, Ras Muhamed contains within its modest area an astounding variety of life, ranging from the gazelles of its northern desert area to the brilliant orange coral groupers of its skirting reefs.

3
Ras Muhammad Geography

The boundaries of Ras Muhamed extend far out into the surrounding waters, and even the most casual of visitors is struck by how much of the park is dominated by the sea. Even the dry land area of the park seems a part of the marine world: in the north, large dunes are interspersed with outcroppings of Miocene limestone in which are embedded an astonishing wealth and variety of marine fossils. In fact, the dramatic promontory that marks the Sinai’s southernmost tip belongs in part to the sea, as it is in fact an enormous, fossilized coral reef, left high and dry tens of thousands of years ago.
For many visitors, Ras Muhamed’s most stunning scenery is found underwater, in the broad, terraced coral reefs that encircle the peninsula. Fire corals and brilliant sea fans abound here, and among these lush reef corals roams a truly magnificent array of both reef and pelagic fish–over a thousand species in all.
